Love from London…

It feels like years since my last post. After a month of constant bouts of rain in London, I’ve finally decided to brave the streets with my camera in tow. This time ‘round I will document some of my favourite fashion haunts. I couldn’t really find anything specifically centred around London fashion spots while scanning the internet and endless travel books. So I hope these next few posts will prove insightful. Fashion and style is everywhere and nowhere does this feel more true than in London.

Of course, these posts are all from an Antipodeans perspective and I’m surely missing a ton of places… so if you’re a Londoner or have visited London, please guide me to the fashion light.

NB. I am living in Soho so the spots visited will be unfairly biased around the area.

Farewell…

Apologies for the lack of posts but my mac has been sick and I’ve been unable to get to a computer. Anyway, during this short siesta I’ve suddenly decided to relocate. I’m heading off to London and Paris for a while. So this is farewell to marvellous Melbourne (at least temporarily). To everyone who has embraced Melbourne Runway, I am truly truly grateful.

Please do pop back to this site… I will have my camera in tow shooting the odd street scene during my Antipodean adventure.

For those in Melbourne, please look out for my final column in the City Weekly next Thursday.

x Marianne

CBD - the black canvas

Sometimes if I’m wearing all black, I get the urge to add a dose of colour. But this girl shows that with a restrained colour palette you can really play with texture.

Sydney .. rafw

It's the third day of Sydney Rosemount Australia Fashion Week.. with back to back shows and the odd shopping stint, I still managed to capture a few shots. I think these street shots highlight how brilliant Sydney fashion is and how it easily rivals other major cities... but too bad the same thing can't be said about what we've seen showcased on the runway! What are your thoughts, am I the only one slightly disgruntled?

Current TV, the Global Network

Ok, I know it's been a bit of a dry spell on the site.. but not to worry! I'm heading off to Sydney next week for Rosemount Australia Fashion Week so I promise to capture some of the fashion action.

Also, a while back I styled a video shoot for Current TV, a global network based in LA. Here's the final product (and no, I didn't do any of the cheesy editing!).

Sometimes it seems as though every second person in Melbourne is a jewellery designer. And so few are able to have a real point of difference with their designs. But this lady has created some real treasures with her individually hand painted earrings.

When I saw this young lady, I immediately thought of Anna Sui... maybe it's the blunt fringe and the print smock. Anyway, it seems that Miss Sui is not the only one who can work a mean print.. the dress is from the lovely Zara!

The Sydney Post

I was away for a few days in Sydney and I was very impressed with the city’s sense of style. I must say, I was rather daunted approaching people in such unfamiliar terrain.. but, style for style!

Sydneysiders seem to be a lot more polished than bohemianish Melbourne. Even though Melbourne has an “eclectic” style sensibility, it does sometimes become predictable and the norm is what actually looks fresh. I don’t know if this makes much sense (nor do I want to stereotype), but that’s what I found in Sydney… a sense of freshness.

CBD – the Stylist

What are you wearing?
Work pants from Carhaart that I’ve cut into shorts, a tank top, a peach coloured old lingerie shawl that I found at Shag.

Are you involved in fashion?
Yes, I’m in retail and starting to be a stylist as well.

How does styling work?
Well, I did a course at RMIT called Visual Merchandising…we did a subject called photo styling and that’s kind of where I found my main passion. At the moment I’m working with a styling called Mellissa Gadston. I’m her assistant.. it’s just like sourcing, putting together outfits for shoots and commercials and stuff.

Ever thought of being a stylist to the stars?
I’ve thought about it. I’ve done a bit of styling for up and coming artists.. you’re kind of a little bit more restricted.

Best styling job so far?
I helped Melissa do sourcing for Fashion Trend Magazine. It was actually a denim luxe story. And that was really fun…I got to deal with a lot of fun people as well.

Finally, what’s your favourite thing about Melbourne?
I love the food and café culture.
